History

In Tbilisi’s Old Town, the Church of the Holy Trinity is located, commonly known as the “Old Trinity Church.”

The church, an example of traditional Georgian ecclesiastical architecture, has undergone several major alterations over the years. A church already stood on this site in the 18th century. The building acquired its present form following restoration in 1988.

The interior of Tbilisi’s Old Trinity Church was painted in the 1890s by the Italian artist Ludwig (Luigi) Longo. His work is considered particularly significant in the context of Georgian ecclesiastical art, as he combined traditional Georgian iconography with elements of European academic painting.

Ilia Chavchavadze and Olga Guramishvili, as well as Ekvtime Takaishvili and Nino Poltoretskaya, were married in this church.
